SEWAGE & SUMP PUMP ANNUAL PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE
Scheduled preventative maintenance (PM) will add to the longevity of your pump.
The majority of sump pumps are located in basements or lower level living quarters. Should the sewage/sump pump fail without you knowing it may flood toilet waste throughout the bottom level of your home. This waste is a biohazard and remediation prices will reflect that, potentially costing thousands of dollars.
The service technician should notice immediately if your sump/sewage pump has a high-level alarm installed. The alarm will activate when the liquid level is above normal operating conditions and allows you to stop the flow of water eliminating or reducing flooding and water damage.
Annual PM allows the service technician to:
- Operate the pump and listen for unusual noises or vibrations
- Check audible/visual alarm (if equipped)
- Inspect electrical supply cord, alarm cord (if equipped) and float switch cords for abrasions or cracking
- Remove debris/floatables and scum rings from the basin walls
- Re-adjust float switch elevations if needed
- Allows technician to discuss findings with owner re: flushable and non- flushable material.
Don’t ignore unusual noises or odors, vibrations, slow gurgling drains, tripped breaker(s), intermittent alarms as these are all warnings in advance that the sewage/sump pump needs service.
Will an annual PM completely eliminate a pump failure? No. However, routine maintenance can reduce future mechanical failures. With proper maintenance a quality pump average lifespan is 7- 10 years.
